Local news site Kens5 reports San Antonio doctor performs "awake" breast augmentation

Women have a new way to get a shapelier figure without going under anesthesia. A San Antonio doctor is performing breast augmentation while the patient is awake.

23-year-old Angelina Bodie opted for this method to change her profile. She wanted to boost her confidence with breast enhancements.

“I will be able to fill my shirts out better,” Bodie said. “I’m very small so I just want to feel more like a woman instead of a girl.”

Bodie was not in a hospital and she was not put under anesthesia. She had her implants put in at Radiance MedSpa in Alamo Heights, where Dr. Laura Bennack performed the surgery using sedatives and local anesthetics.

“A lot of people don’t want to take the risk of anesthesia for something that’s cosmetic,” Bennack explained. “The fact that people can do something cosmetic with very little risk is very appealing.”

The procedure takes about two hours. The doctor begins by numbing the breast, and then uses a saline solution with lidocaine to numb the entire chest wall area. She makes a small incision in the crease under the breast, and rolls up the flattened implant to slip it inside.

Once it’s in place and positioned, it’s filled with saline to create the desired effect. Patients can even take a look during the procedure to give input.

“They may feel maybe a little pulling or tugging when you’re putting in the implant,” Bennack said, “kind of like having a c-section. You feel a little bit of tugging, but no pain.”

Bennack says recovery is faster since there’s no general anesthesia.

Bodie went from an “A” cup to a “C” cup.

The cost savings can be significant, since there’s no anesthesiologist and no hospital bills to pay. The “awake” breast surgery costs about $4000 as opposed to an average $6000 for the conventional operation.
