Taiwan's Department of Health moves to Authorize Silicone Implants
Executive Yuan's Department of Health will hold a meeting at the end of September to decide whether or not to lift a ban on silicone implants, which have been banned in the country for the past fifteen years.
DOH said that it is still concerned on the risk of the new "cohesive gel" silicone implants leaking after breast augmentation surgery.
A department official said that if DOH does decide to lift the ban on silicone implants, women receiving "cohesive gel" silicone implants will be required to undergo an MRI test once a year for the first two years after the surgery and then once every two years.
Currently, the government allows saline implants for breast augmentation procedures in Taiwan.
A cosmetic surgeon said that Taiwan is one of the few countries in the world which ban silicon implants, which break less easily than saline implants.
The new "cohesive gel" silicone implants have been approved for use in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South Korea, increasing the number of breast augmentation procedures by 35 percent in the U.S. alone.
