Interesting developments from India, where a plastic surgeon takes a habit to sexually assault his clients who came for a boob job ?
MUMBAI:
High drama broke out at the Bandra metropolitan court on Sunday when the bail
hearing for cosmetologist Dr Vijay Sharma came up. The doctor had been arrested
on Saturday for allegedly molesting a 22-year-old TV reporter after she had
finished interviewing him for a
story.
On Sunday, a homemaker
from Andheri showed up and told the court that the doctor had molested her too.
A mother of two, Leena Mishra (name changed) told the magistrate that she had
visited Sharma’s Andheri clinic for breast implants and a tummy tuck in
June 2006. Two months later, she approached Sharma again when she started
developing problems in her chest. Mishra alleged that Sharma took her into a
bathroom and asked her to strip. “As soon as I removed my clothes, Dr
Sharma was all over me,’’ she
claimed.
Mishra also complained
that she had frequented the Khar police station to register a complaint, but the
cops had refused to take down the
case.
The holiday bench of the
Bandra court asked Mishra to approach the police station and file her complaint.
By late Sunday evening, the Khar police had registered a case against Sharma
under Section 354 (molestation) and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of
the IPC, both bailable
offences.
While Sharma was
granted bail of Rs 20,000 in the case involving the TV reporter, he was
re-arrested in the second case.
Till 10 pm Sunday night he was
still in the lock-up as the defence team were reportedly unable to make a bail
application to the
police.
Interestingly,
Mishra’s family was also keen on registering a cheating complaint, which
is a non-bailable offence, against Sharma, but the police were reluctant to file
this.
Speaking to TOI outside
the court, Mishra said her surgery went wrong within two months and pus and
water started accumulating in her chest. "I developed problems after surgery and
each time I visited him for medical help, he would molest me," she claimed. When
asked why her husband did not go along with her, she said, "When my husband used
to come along, Dr Sharma refused to give me time. In fact, a lot of women have
complained to Sharma’s secretary about his
behaviour."
Regarding the
cheating complaint, Mishra told TOI, "He charged me Rs 2.25 lakh for breast
silicone implants and fat removal of the stomach. But he gave me receipts for
only Rs 20,700. He operated on me but he did not give me any receipts for the
operation." Later, Mishra alleged Sharma started blackmailing her when she asked
him to remove the
implants.
When asked about the
fresh allegations, Sharma said, "I have conducted almost 25,000 surgeries and it
is possible that in one or two cases the patient may not be completely
satisfied." He said the woman’s implants may have developed a problem due
to a bruise or a tissue problem, but not wrong
surgery.
Dr Anjali Damania, a
colleague of Sharma’s, and the accused doctor’s daughter and sister
questioned why Mishra was bringing up the matter "after two years". Mishra
contended that her pleas to the police to file a complaint had been falling on
deaf ears.
